We've talked before about how delicately Bill uses the fan brush. Watch in slow motion - can you see just how little the brush bends when he touches the canvas. This is a very light touch that prevents "scalloping" which is a common problem in many paintings with the fan brush. … [Read more...]
“You know it is not right, so why you leave it there?”
Bill steps back and looks at his painting. He finds an area that needs to be fixed. "You know it is not right..." How does he know that? Because of the time he spent observing Mother Nature. Bill knew exactly how things should look and he made sure his paintings were true to what he saw. … [Read more...]
A wet shadow!
Bill is trying to create a special effect in the shadowed section of the rock. Notice how he works and reworks the area until he gets exactly what he wants. You'll notice, again, how delicately he touches the canvas with the fan brush. That allows him to rework the area without overworking it. … [Read more...]
“That looks wet”

This gets all the paint out of the brush. It creates a heavy amount of paint which allows him to create the "spray" by lightly "flipping" that layer of paint. Doesn't the lake, behind the … [Read more...]
“Make it with spark!”
Bill shows you why he spent so much time adding dark areas to this painting. Notice how the white paint pops off the canvas. So...what is Bill doing here? Isn't he "highlighting" - just like he does with his mountains? Except here he's using his fan brush. Having difficulty highlighting mountains with the palette knife? Try using your fan brush with the same light touch Bill … [Read more...]
