Here’s a tip that will make your paintings bright and beautiful before you lay your first brush stroke on the canvas!
In this clip from the bonus videos in our new “You Can Paint” Master Class, Alexander Master Artist Tom Anderson explains why the Renaissance “Old Masters” painted on wood. Remember, there were no electric lights in the Renaissance. Most of the light came from candles and, of course, sunlight. Take a look at some of those cathedrals…not a lot of light coming in those tiny windows, is there? Those artists understood the effects of refracted light and made sure their surfaces were prepared correctly to take advantage of what little light was often available!

You are speaking about sealing the back of the canvas. What do you use? Gesso?
