Bill demonstrates a simple two step process to create water.
Notice Bill’s brush strokes when he hypnotizes the water reflection – the large “X” strokes. And listen to the sound of the brush on the canvas. He is touching the canvas very lightly – just enough to move the paint slightly.
This gentle, light technique takes some getting used to. We’d recommend practicing this technique with a blank canvas and a dry brush. Get the “feel” of lightly touching the canvas. It is better to have too light a touch than too heavy.
When Bill makes his “long lines” – this is another very light touch movement. Watch how he wipes his brush on the paper towels mid-way through the process. Even though he lightly touches the canvas, he’s still picking up “dirt” and you do not want to be pulling that down through your nicely formed reflection. You may even want to wipe your brush every couple of brush strokes just to make sure you are using a clean brush.
