Pink highlights
Because Bill has spent time working on the right side of the painting. The side he moves to now has dried a bit - just enough to pull the paint off the palette knife. Fan brush mastery

Happy fan brush tree
Time to start filling in details in the foreground. Because the tree is still in the distance, Bill uses the fan brush to lay in the basic foundation of the tree.
