Bill is nearing the end of this painting. He has taken care of the side of the painting that is lit by the sun. Now he starts finishing up the shadow side. The painting is perfectly balanced between light and dark with perfect perspective driving the viewer's eye deep into the painting. Notice how much Bill has put into this painting so the viewer can construct their own story … [Read more...]
I want to harmonize with Mother Nature!
Bill painted what he saw in Mother Nature. Bill knows how light would affect this scene, so he applies it to his painting. Your painting must make sense. How you do that is up to you. In this case, Bill uses his fan brush and adds highlights to the edge of the rock where the light would hit. He could have put a bush there or just highlighted the rock. Take your lead from Bill. … [Read more...]
It’s got to be done!
Bill touches up his rock because he sees something that needs to be fixed. A painting has to "make sense". An obvious example would be a missing shadow that should be at the base of a tree. In this case, it's such a tiny thing. Most inexperienced artists would leave it out and their painting would be O.K. But Bill sees that it needs to be there! It's these tiny details that … [Read more...]
Leave the darks in between…
Bill continues highlighting his trees. His warning to "leave the darks in between" helps to make the trees appear more realistic. Also notice how he adds the "mossy" area at the bottom of the trees. He allows his brush to get "dirty" as he goes further away from the trees. This is as it should be as the light disappears into the dark. Remember, he had to thin his paint … [Read more...]
“All of a sudden it will stay there!”
Two great tips in this video clip. Watch how Bill highlights his tree trunks. He has already "plowed" through the paint, so he has removed the paint so he can lay in his highlights without worrying about "mud". However, it's a different animal (as Bill would say) when it comes to highlighting the trees. You've already seen him slather on the paint, so you've got to make your … [Read more...]
“I plow that paint away!”
Bill has just put a lot of paint onto the canvas. Now watch how he creates his tree trunks. This method will help create depth in the tree because he can then add paint into the channel he just created and not worry about it becoming muddy. Notice the order in which he works. First the basic dark shape of the tree, then the tree trunk. Now he can color/highlight the trunk and … [Read more...]
