For some reason a lot of folks fear oil paints. And yet, oils are the most forgiving medium, as Bill demonstrates in this video clip.
Yes, oils take a long time to dry, but that’s what allows you to change your mind even days after you finish a painting. Leonardo da Vinci loved the slow drying nature of oils and painted exclusively in oils. Yes, he painted on an egg tempera base, but if you know anything about Leonardo, he would not be rushed with his paintings.

It is true! Although, I believe they fear oil painting because the set up with oils is more studied, and requires specific materials. I believe they fear this factor more so than they have an issue with drying time. What I mean is that lots of painters who are dabblers, do not take the time to do all of the set up which oil painting requires, nor do they bother with purchasing the proper materials. For this reason they are drawn to water paints and acrylics. I think they see those types of media as more instant, though Bill shows how a fine oil painting can be done very rapidly! How much more instant can one get than a 28 minute oil painting! Only oils can create these effects in that amount of time! Bill was a master in my opinion.
