Gary asked that we post Bill’s brush loading technique and here it is. Click the “Full Screen” button on the play status bar (at the right) to get a better view of this technique.
Bill wants to get a lot of paint on his brush, so notice how he “drags” the brush across and through the paint. Of course he’s mixing paint while he’s doing this but that brush is picking up a lot of paint deep into the bristles.
Also notice how Bill does not bang his brush into the palette. Slamming your brush into the palette will destroy your bristles over time. If you watch Bill load his other brushes, he uses this same technique.
You want your brushes to last and how you treat them while you paint will keep them supple for decades. Even when Bill uses his “beater bar” to clean his brush, he is gentle with it and uses it sparingly!
