Bill needs to create a shoreline. Usually he does this with his palette knife but it doesn't make sense in this painting, does it? Against the dark it looks very bright

From the beginning Bill is thinking of the effect of shadow on what he's about to paint. This foliage is not in direct sunlight but it is still bright. So he darkens his yellow just a bit. Bill is nearing the end of this painting. He has taken care of the side of the painting that is lit by the sun. Now he starts finishing up the shadow side. The painting is perfectly balanced between light and dark with perfect perspective driving the viewer's eye deep into the painting. Bill painted what he saw in Mother Nature. Bill knows how light would affect this scene, so he applies it to his painting. Your painting must make sense. How you do that is up to you.
