Jesse White says
There is a great amount of people that take on the dismissive attitude Bill is describing in regards to painting. This attitude is not only particular to art critics, for it exists throughout multiple disciplines. The purveyors of this attitude despise the good for being good, and the impetus is fuelled by envy. You find this nihilism within the arts, as well as coming from the talking heads of education, in politics and as far flung as what is cool and what is uncool within the bizarre jungle of teenager fads.
The truth is that good productivity, and internally consistent quality work deteriorates envy within a psyche. The need to prove or disprove melts away when one is objectively productive of good work. The productive person knows that they are in the right. They only need to observe their achievements to confirm the quality. The weak person adheres to nihilism, as it reflects their weak sense of life. Their sense of life cries out that the world is oppressive and that meanness and envy is man’s natural state. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and so, an envy-filled nihilist gets to live out his or her life in that paradigm.
A nihilist is not the boss of you, and the spirit of envy does not get to determine what is good and what is not good.
