From the beginning Bill is thinking of the effect of shadow on what he’s about to paint. This foliage is not in direct sunlight but it is still bright. So he darkens his yellow just a bit. However the color still looks great against the dark which he went to great lengths to apply earlier!
Then, as he applies it on the hillside he walks the color up the hill losing the color into the shadows. You’d think the color was gone from his brush because the brush is getting “dirty”, as Bill would say.
Nope! Watch how much color comes out of the brush and how he gets it out at the very bottom of the hill! How did he do that? Watch the clip again and you’ll see he is only using the left half of the fan brush. Then he rolls the brush over and gets out the “fresh” yellow from the other side!
