Bill steps back and looks at his painting. He finds an area that needs to be fixed. "You know it is not right..." How does he know that? Because of the time he spent observing Mother Nature. Bill knew exactly how things should look and he made sure his paintings were true to what he saw. … [Read more...]
A wet shadow!
Bill is trying to create a special effect in the shadowed section of the rock. Notice how he works and reworks the area until he gets exactly what he wants. You'll notice, again, how delicately he touches the canvas with the fan brush. That allows him to rework the area without overworking it. … [Read more...]
“That looks wet”
Bill is barely touching the canvas with the fan brush. Particularly at the :17 second mark, the brush does not bend at all. He touches the canvas enough for the paint to be pulled off the brush. When the paint comes off the brush he is careful not to overwork the area. His touch becomes even lighter, if possible, to move the very top layer of paint. This is a very light … [Read more...]

Bill shows you why he spent so much time adding dark areas to this painting. Notice how the white paint pops off the canvas. So...what is Bill doing here? Isn't he "highlighting" - just like he does with his mountains? Except here he's using his fan brush. Having difficulty highlighting mountains with the palette knife? Try using your fan brush with the same light touch Bill … [Read more...]
A brush with sunshine and a brush with shadow!
Bill is using two brushes to save a bit of time creating the sunlit and shadow waterfalls. Please notice at the :40 second mark how carefully Bill lays the brush on the canvas before he applies the stroke. Also notice how careful he is to avoid "dirtying" the brush with the dark under color. Too many strokes without cleaning the brush will destroy the effect of the sunshine … [Read more...]
