Bill is nearing the end of this painting. He has taken care of the side of the painting that is lit by the sun. Now he starts finishing up the shadow side. The painting is perfectly balanced between light and dark with perfect perspective driving the viewer's eye deep into the painting. Notice how much Bill has put into this painting so the viewer can construct their own story … [Read more...]
It’s got to be done!
Bill touches up his rock because he sees something that needs to be fixed. A painting has to "make sense". An obvious example would be a missing shadow that should be at the base of a tree. In this case, it's such a tiny thing. Most inexperienced artists would leave it out and their painting would be O.K. But Bill sees that it needs to be there! It's these tiny details that … [Read more...]
Leave the darks in between…
Bill continues highlighting his trees. His warning to "leave the darks in between" helps to make the trees appear more realistic. Also notice how he adds the "mossy" area at the bottom of the trees. He allows his brush to get "dirty" as he goes further away from the trees. This is as it should be as the light disappears into the dark. Remember, he had to thin his paint … [Read more...]
“All of a sudden it will stay there!”
Two great tips in this video clip. Watch how Bill highlights his tree trunks. He has already "plowed" through the paint, so he has removed the paint so he can lay in his highlights without worrying about "mud". However, it's a different animal (as Bill would say) when it comes to highlighting the trees. You've already seen him slather on the paint, so you've got to make your … [Read more...]
A greenish touch!
Make sure you watch this video clip in full screen mode so you can see how thick the paint is going on those trees. Bill has not thinned the paint, yet he's painting on top of paint. What does that tell you? It should tell you either that bottom layer has dried enough to let the paint stay on and/or that bottom layer is still very thin. Most likely a combination of … [Read more...]
A little touch of sunshine
Notice how Bill fools the cameraman in the beginning of this clip. But he recovers and gets to the right trees just in time for you to see how Bill highlights them. Bill has not painted on this section of the canvas for quite a while so the paint has dried ("tacked up") just a bit. How do we know this? Did Bill thin the yellow paint he uses? Nope. Also notice that the … [Read more...]
