Bill adds the final touch to Spring Thaw.
In this video, Bill will complete his painting called “Spring Thaw.” Bill had longer to complete this painting as it was produced for video, not for PBS. He was able to spend a bit more time painting and explaining what he was doing. He always wanted more time. He wanted to share with the world all that he knew. We love that about Bill. He was heavily criticized because many artists wanted the “secrets of painting” to remain, well you know, a secret! Bill wanted to share them with the world. Thank you Bill for your giving heart!
Points To Consider:
- The brush bristles barely bend. (say that four times!)
- He uses his “shadow colors” brush to paint in the shadow area.
- Bill doesn’t use his “sunshiny colors” on the shadow side. In other words, the brightest lights are reserved for the sunny side of the painting.
- He added Van Dyke Brown to Sap Green to get his dark base for the shadow side.
- Remember, when he adds the highlights he thins the paint with Magic White. Did you see how he barely touched the canvas but the paint pulled off? If he would have pressed harder the highlights would have meshed with the base color and everything would have turned to mud. This is one of the most important concepts to consider while painting wet-on-wet.
- Bill lets the darks show through to give depth.
Happy Painting!
