Bill Shows Us How To Create a Cluster of Grapes
Bill uses the Alizarin Crimson Background to create a cluster of grapes. Notice he chooses a brush that is just the right size. In one motion he forms the base coat and then strategically places the lights and highlights.
Key Points To Consider:
- The background paint is wet.
- He uses the Alizarin Crimson that is on the canvas to create the purple grapes.
- If Bill wanted green grapes he would have applied a thin coat of transparent green paint
- Bill is very careful with the first few grapes he forms. The ones that will be most prominent in the painting. He takes his time and gets the shape he wants. To add variety he changes the shape of the grapes.
- He applies the base color using Titanium White. The Titanium White mixes with the Alizarin Crimson that is already applied to the canvas.
- He starts where the lightest grapes would be. As he loses paint, he works into the shadows.
- Bill always keeps in mind what the finished painting will be. He only paints the grapes where they will be shown, rather than painting grapes that will be covered. This saves time and makes it easier to paint the next thing.
- He softens the grapes before he adds the lights and then softens them again before he highlights them.
