The Background is the Foundation to Your Painting. Thin Paint Goes Down Deep.
Today’s Daily Tip Comes from a project that Tom taught for our Beyond Master Class Students. It is a very short video but is packed with the most important tip of all for wet-on-wet painting. The first layer goes deep into the canvas and subsequent layers go on top. If you have too much paint on the background, the next layer will slip and slide.
Key Points To Consider;
- Tom has placed the Magic White® on the canvas.
- He loads just the tip of his brush so he doesn’t have too much paint.
- The mountain range he is creating is closer to the viewer, therefore it is darker in value.
- Tom is careful to not make repetitive shapes on the canvas.
- It looks like Tom is applying a lot of paint at first. He isn’t. He doesn’t reload his brush but stretches the paint.
- Always keep this in mind. The first layer goes deep.
Happy Painting!
