Try This Tip the Next Time You Want To Soften Your Background
Today’s Tip Comes from our “Beyond Master Class Series with Tom Anderson.” Tom’s painting, “The Irish Castle” is the first painting in this series. He is going to show you a little trick to use to tame the background.
Objects appear more muted and fuzzy when they are far away. Details are seen up close. So in this video, Tom wants his background hills to be further away. There are several ways he could achieve his goal but today he chooses to “pat his way to success!”
Key Points To Consider;
- The canvas is covered in wet paint.
- The Alexander 1″ Brush is clean and dry. (Never mind that it doesn’t look that way, Tom has cleaned the brushenough that no paint will come off as he pats the canvas.
- He holds the brush flat against the canvas.
- He touches lightly to begin with and adds more pressure if he wants the painting to be darker.
- The brush is picking up paint from the canvas each time Tom touches it.
- If you feel like your brush is getting polluted, wipe it with a paper towel.
- Notice how much softer the background looks when Tom is finished.
Happy Painting!
