How Important is the Placement of Your Signature?
This Video Tip is short but very powerful. While filming an online class with Buck Paulson we had a chance to talk about the signature. Normally Buck will wait until his painting is dry to sign it. Today’s clip is an exception because he wanted to share with us his thought process.
Points To Consider While Signing a Painting:
- What do you want your signature to do? Do you want it to add to, or balance the composition?
- What color do you want to use? Bill Alexander, often signed his paintings with Permanent Red. That was a signature move of his. If you don’t always use the same color, how do you know what color to use?
- Keep in mind that the placement is important so the signature isn’t covered by the frame.
- In today’s video Buck decided to use the base color and to have his signature balance out the composition.
When I first started working for Alexander Art in 1986 I was so excited to paint and to show people how to paint. My nephew, Joel was just 5 years old. He knew how to sign his name. Well kind of! I think there was a letter or two that was backward. I will try to find the photo because the painting that Joel, at 5 years old, did was precious. Imagine everything on the canvas a solid color of earth green, the color he got when he mixed EVERYTHING together on his canvas. He then used red to sign his name. His signature was the height of the canvas! Good thing he only had four letters! You can imagine that his mother cherishes his painting still today!
For those of you who aren’t like Joel, and don’t want to sign your paintings, may I suggest that you do! The people who love you will be so happy when your paintings are hanging on their walls WITH your signature on them!
Happy Painting!
