Priming The Canvas
Today Buck will talk about the principle of priming the canvas with a color other than white. He does this for several reasons.
- To create unity on the canvas.
- In case he wants to use some of the tinted canvas colors.
- When you put the paint on top of a primed canvas you get what Buck calls “Quality of Color,” almost like glazing in reverse.
- His teacher’s teacher did it with great success.
Key Points:
- Buck primed the canvas with acrylic paint. (Alexander Art no longer makes acrylic paint.
- He lets the canvas dry thoroughly before he begins the oil stage of painting.
- There is an outlined sketch indicating where the waves will be.
- He coats the canvas with Magic Clear Medium so he has a wet surface to paint into.
- He is using an Alexander 1″ Brush because of the stiff bristles.
- The first layer of oil paint is going on thinly and dry. Buck is creating a mottled look so the painting doesn’t appear to be flat.
- When he adds the brown tone he starts lower and removes a lot of the paint. With less paint in the brush, he works up into the previous color to create harmony without overpowering the color
There will be future clips from this painting as Buck demonstrates different seascape techniques.
Happy Painting!
