Tom explains the concept of thin paint and thick paint. Why and how to do it.
Today’s Daily Tip comes from a project we filmed with Tom called “Mountain River.” This is a tip about laying the first layers down deep.
Points to Consider;
- Tom did NOT coat the canvas with Magic White™.
- He used Alizarin Crimson to roughly map in his composition because it is a forgiving, neutral color. Thus it can be used throughout the painting. Later on in the project, Tom works other colors into the red map.
- Today’s tip is not about the red paint, but we just wanted to explain what Tom is doing with all that red on his canvas.
- Tom, as usual, is using very little paint.
- He thins his colors with Magic Clear to cause the paint to move easier on the canvas. This technique works the same as applying Magic White™ or Magic Clear on the canvas. It is just a different approach. He will end up with a thin layer of paint on his canvas.
- Tom is using an Alexander Badger Brush to scrub the color onto the canvas. He is pressing quite hard. Notice the type of stroke he is using. He wants little nuances in his painting, so he is using short and long strokes.
Happy Painting!
