Be prepared to paint like the pros once you master this technique!
The hardest thing about learning to paint wet-on-wet is understanding how and when to use thick or thin paint. In today’s Video Clip, Bill teaches a valuable lesson on how to add highlights. In fact, he defines a whole forest by using this simple technique.
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill’s canvas is prepared with a thin coat of Magic White®
- Thick paint is used to create the background color for the trees.
- Bill doesn’t clean his brush before going into the yellow paint.
- Bill is using Alexander Art’s “Cadmium Yellow” from the tube.
- The first color he mixes is too thick and won’t stick to the layer already applied. (Thick paint won’t stick to thick paint.)
- He thins his paint with Magic White®. This changes the consistency of the paint. Thin paint WILL stick to thick paint.
- The highlights go on top of the thick paint. The paint doesn’t meld with the existing layer.
- He reloads as he runs out of paint.
- Bill uses the tip of the brush, with very little pressure. Too much pressure would give a smeared effect.
- He moves around the canvas allowing dark places to show through.
- When he highlights his highlights, he touches above the paint already applied to the canvas. This keeps the lightest color on top of the tree.
