Using The Principle of Blending on Waves and Rocks
How much better will your paintings be once you understand how to use this important principle of creating and blending values?
Key Points:
- The paint on the canvas is wet.
- Buck starts with a number 1 value for the eye of the wave.
- Number 3 value is the dark below the eye.
- Buck zigzags the two values together to form a number 2 value.
- Because of the contrast between the Number 1 and Number 3 value, he repeats his steps a few times.
- He uses a dry Alexander Mop Brush to pat the colors to soften.
- He wipes his brush on a paper towel often as he is picking up paint from the canvas.
- Before he places the light on the top of the waves he considers where the sun is and the direction of his light source.
- He also considers the nature and character of foam.
- It is important to understand the nature of a wave.
- Buck wants a softness rather than a hard line so he taps his brush. He also taps upward at times to create the water that is splashing up and being blown back by the wind.
- This principle can be applied to the rocks. as well.
Please share with us how you are applying this principle to your work.
Happy Painting!
