How Does Bill Get Depth In His Paintings?
Bill talks about how the term “Fire In” came about. We can see from Bill’s videos that he was passionate about painting and unafraid of the canvas. There was a time that Bill was afraid of the canvas. He didn’t want to be so he decided that it was all backward! He decided that the “lousy” canvas should be scared of him! He envisioned the canvas shaking, instead of him! It changed the way he painted. He painted with more confidence and much more joy. Let’s learn from Bill! Let’s not be afraid to try new things!
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill is painting on a wet canvas.
- The Alexander 1″ Brush is designed specially to work with the Alexander thick paint.
- The background paint is thin. There is very little on the canvas.
- The tree base is made with thick, firm paint. The canvas pulls the thick paint off the brush as Bill touches it.
- The spring in the brush and the firmness of the bristles create the appearance of a thousand little strokes.
- If you touch a canvas with thick paint on it, with a brush that has no paint on it, the thick paint will lift off. It is important to have the brush properly loaded.
- Bill is full of gratitude for life. He states often that “it is a joy to be alive.”
Remember, Bill and the other artists painted a long time before they could so effortlessly do what they are showing us. Be gentle with yourself if you don’t get it right away. Pretend you are learning to ride a bike! Remember when we were young, we didn’t give up we just got back on. That is what we are suggesting you do today!
Happy Painting!
