Understand this one common problem and your artwork will improve drastically.
Each week we gather through Zoom for a class with Master Artist, Buck Paulson. In his class, we learn how to critique a painting. It is an amazing way to learn. Doesn’t matter if Buck is talking about our painting or about someone else’s painting, the learning is still the same.
One of the most common problems we see has to do with light. Light travels in a straight line towards the viewer and it is important to paint it that way to get a realistic look. There are a lot of things you can move around in your composition. Light is not one of them! Bill tells us “cover up what you don’t like!” So, that is what we do! However, nature trumps. Just because the light might go better somewhere else, doesn’t mean it is a good idea. So as you are out in nature, and as you see paintings from great artists, study how light travels. Notice how it just “spills” out across the landscape but in an organized way.
Happy Painting!
