Robert creates a nice background sky.
This is the continuation of the project called Canadian Goose.
Key Points To Consider:
- Robert is painting on a wet canvas. The Magic White has been applied and now he is ready to add some color.
- Bill Alexander did much of his mixing right on the canvas. He also painted from his memory, rather than a reference photo.
- All of the other artists that we filmed painted from reference photos and most of them pre-mixed their colors because of the limited time they had to paint.
- We have listed the formulas on the screen to show how to make the colors that Robert uses.
- Robert paints directly over his sketch but doesn’t worry because he can always wipe the paint away. Since Robert reinforced his lines, the sketch will remain on the canvas.
- He loads his brush with the peach color and starts adding color while he defines the horizon. He starts there because that is where he wants the deepest color of peach.
- As he works his way up the canvas, the color on the brush mixes with Magic White. This allows for a lighter value as he goes towards the top.
- What is in the sky will reflect in the water. The calmer the water, the more reflection there will be. Reflections don’t show up in fast-moving water.
- He starts at the top with the brightest blue. Again, the paint on the brush will change value as a result of the Magic White.
- As Robert creates clouds using the lavender-grey, he uses mostly horizontal strokes. The clouds are larger toward the top of the canvas and as they come down the canvas they appear smaller and flatter.
- Remember what we’ve said before, everything far away will appear more horizontal and vertical.
Sometimes color mixing can be intimidating. That is why we teach people how to mix color from the very first painting in our master class. Knowing what to put together to make any color you want, from yellow, red, and blue, is empowering! Not only will you know how to mix the color in the first place, but you will know what to add to a color that seems to be off. In our Advanced Master Class, we have an hour-long video on how to mix all the Alexander Colors from Yellow, Red, and Blue. How much money can you save if you don’t have to buy so many different tubes of paint?
Happy Painting!
