Tighten Up A Loose Canvas
It has happened to all of us. We go to the art store to buy canvas and we get it home only to discover one of them is loose. What happens next? Do we take it back to the store? Today Tom will show you what you can do instead. Only takes 15 minutes to fix a loose canvas.
I was looking at the bonus videos that come with our Introductory Master Class and found this video. I think this knowledge is something everyone needs to know.
Key Points To Consider:
- All you need is your canvas, water, and a hairdryer.
- You can use either a brush or your hands to apply the water to the canvas.
- Lay the canvas flat and make sure you rub the water deep into the canvas.
- Cover both the front and backside of the canvas.
- Use a hairdryer and dry in a circular motion. (It is ok to hold the dryer close to the canvas.)
- Keep drying until the canvas is dry. You can tell if it is tight by thumping it. a proper canvas will have a nice drum sound when thumped.
- Notice the staples on the back of the stretcher bars. We prefer this instead of the canvases that are side-stapled. We feel like it is a better quality canvas as the canvas wraps around the entire side of the stretcher bar instead of stopping on the side. It is easier to get a tighter stretch.
- Canvas manufacturers started stapling the canvas on the sides to save money. Saving money is not always worth it!
- Speaking of saving money, the people that have completed our Master Class series save lots of money on paint. In that series, we teach how to use the best products and to use them sparingly. One student just told me that she just finished her first year of painting (she went through all the levels and then beyond.). She just finished her first small tube of Alexander Phthalo Blue. When you have good paint, and you are taught proper brush loading, you will be the master of your palette.
Happy Painting!
