Does this ever happen to you?
We asked this question:
If you could sit down and have a conversation with Master Artist Tom Anderson, what two questions would you ask him? Several of you wrote in with great questions. I met up with Tom in his studio(virtually) and asked him your questions. This video clip is a response to a question from Heath. Thanks for asking Heath!
His question was “What do you do when you get to a point in your painting and you are just blocked?”
Tom had some great suggestions;
Key Points To Consider:
- This happens often to all of us.
- Set the painting aside. Somewhere where you can study it. Hang it on a wall that you will pass by or set it next to the TV if you are watching television. Somewhere where you will be able to study it. Look at it often. Sometimes just glance at it and sometimes study it for a while.
- Your subconscious will take over and will guide you as to what to do.
- Sometimes it is just important to put it down for a while so you can see it as a whole painting rather than individual strokes. We call it “looking from the 10,000 ft level.”
- Work on other paintings. Come back to it when you feel inspired.
- Study it in the mirror.
- Turn it upside down and turn your reference photo upside down as well.
- Show it to others. Get their opinion. You will be surprised how much others can see even if they aren’t painters.
- Sometimes things just don’t look right because maybe the perspective is off. It is important to follow the laws of nature if you want something to look natural. If it is off, no matter what you do it will look off.
- We have several classes that will help you progress as an artist. Our Master Class by Tom Anderson is a wonderful place to start. There are several levels so you can start from where you are.
- We also have a critique class by Buck Paulson. In his class you can submit your painting and Buck will guide you as to how to make it better.
Happy Painting!
