“You Can’t Make Yellow Yellower” Bill Alexander
Bill loved to paint light. He used to say, “You can’t make yellow, yellower, you can’t make red, redder.” What he meant is that the way to make things look brighter can’t be done just by adding more light paint.” As artists, we create the illusion of light. There is no better way to brighten something up than to surround it with darkness. Life is kind of like that also. Right now we can all probably think of something we miss that we used to just take for granted. But this too shall pass! There will be brighter days ahead!
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill starts to add character to the sky by using his big brush and Alizarin Crimson, with a touch of Phthalo Green to add darker values.
- Using his fan brush he adds the sun. He uses Cadmium Yellow and White to make the brightest yellow he can make.
- He determines where he wants the sun to be and smashes his loaded brush into the canvas.
- The pressure Bill applies to his brush causes the yellow paint to mix with the background color. This gives him another value. He uses this value to surround the sun.
- Bill was so excited when he saw young people learn to paint. I remember when Bill met Tom Anderson. In 1992, Tom came to Salem, Oregon to become an Alexander Certified Instructor. Bill was so excited to have someone so young as one of his teachers.
- Bill always gave thanks to his viewers. He was a humble man and he always remembered that he was on television for so many years, not because he was great, but because his viewers showed support for him by calling the stations and requesting his show. He would begin or end his shows with “I Love You!” He truly meant it.
- Bill may not have thought he was so great but we know better! Thank you, Bill!
Happy Painting!
