The most important step to painting Bill’s mountains.
Bill Alexander painted amazing mountains and he made it look so easy. It is that easy….for Bill, for several reasons. First Bill painted thousands and thousands of paintings in his lifetime. He understood how the paint and brushes could work together to achieve the outcome he wanted. He understood wet-on-wet painting like none other.
Bill will show us the most important step to painting mountains. That is to use very little paint, to begin with, and to take your time to define the tops of the mountain range. If you understand this concept, you too will paint beautiful mountains.
Points To Consider:
- There is a thin coat of Magic White on the canvas.
- Bill uses several colors to make his dark base color. He is using thick paint and mixes it to a marbled look. He uses Titanium White, Phthalo Blue, Permanent Red, and a touch of Ivory Black for his base color.
- He is careful not to over-mix his paint. The reason is that he wants a variation of color. This gives the idea of detail right off.
- Bill uses very little paint.
- His base color mixes with the Magic White as Bill works it deep into the canvas. Even by letting the light from the canvas show through, he gets more detail.
- He knows what he wants the finished painting to look like before he puts his first stroke on the canvas.
- He doesn’t rush while defining the tops of the mountains. He varies the heights and shapes.
- He uses a clean, dry Blending Brush to destroy the bottom of the mountain and it creates a wonderful mist that is so prevalent in the Northwestern USA. Bill painted many subjects but he really loved to paint the world he lived in. Beautiful mountains, giant fir trees, clouds!
- The Blending Brush is a stiff bristle brush and it works wonderfully to knock off hard edges. Notice how soft Bill makes the mist appear?
