“Horizontal lines say it is laying flat” Sharon P
In this video, Sharon continues her painting called “Nocturne.” She is going to teach a couple of key principles that will be useful no matter what you paint.
Points To Consider:
- Sharon’s canvas is wet because she had to finish the painting in 27 minutes.
- She is painting fast for the same reason.
- Sharon creates the shadow area on the sidewalk by lining up her Hake Brush (Bunny Brush) with the angle of the sidewalk but pulling the brush in a horizontal motion.
- She double-loads the brush as she did for the tree trunks to create the fence posts. Light on one side and dark on the other.
- The further back she goes into the distance with the posts, the smaller and closer together they become. For the distant posts, she just makes small dots to indicate that the fence continues.
- Notice when she places the rails on the posts, she stays the same distance from the top of the post as she goes back. The rails appear further apart on the left because that area is closer to the viewer. The rails seem to come together the further back they go. This creates perspective.
- She adds foliage to break up the lines of the posts and rails.
- She adds rain puddles by laying light paint in a vertical stroke. This creates a look of wetness.
- She softens the puddles with the Hake Brush in a horizontal stroke.
- Sharon uses the fan brush without any paint to cut into the sidewalk to disturb the puddles. This makes it look more realistic.
What is holding you back as an artist? How can we help?.
Happy Painting!
