Preparing a Black Canvas with Transparent Paint
This video clip comes from a video that Bill recorded, NOT for PBS. Which means he has a little more time to explain what he is doing. This is the first part of a series of clips we will show. Here Bill is just laying the foundation for what is to come. We want you to learn the whole process so you too can paint with confidence.
Key Points To Consider:
- The canvas was prepared with Black flat latex house paint. No, you do not need to buy Gesso! You can visit your local hardware store and buy it by the gallon! We used to sell Gesso and as soon as I knew that it was just flat latex paint, we stopped selling it and instead encourage people to buy it locally. In fact, I used the last of our stock to paint our studio walls!. Remember our motto? “When we know better, we do better!” We won’t ever sell you something that is unnecessary.
- Remember to let the latex paint completely dry. Overnight isn’t a bad idea!
- Bill is using transparent paint to “condition” his canvas.
- He takes his time to make sure the paint is evenly distributed. Not too much! Not too little!
You will be amazed at what Bill is going to do on this canvas. Stay tuned!
Happy Painting!
