Some key points today that make all the difference.
This video tip is a little longer than normal. Bill continues his project called “Spring Thaw.” He created this painting for video so he has more time to paint and talk about what he is doing.
Points To Consider:
- Bill is painting on a wet canvas.
- He continues to create a story as he creates. He talks about the fish in the high mountain lakes. He talks about the danger in creating the roads leading to the high mountain lakes. Did you know that Bill had a fish hatchery on his property in Powell River and he put 40,000 salmon into the ocean before he sold his property? Bill loved to fish and he was all about giving back to Mother Nature!
- Bill is using very thick paint as he adds highlights and shadows to his painting. The painting is coated with Magic White but he has been painting on this canvas long enough that the paint is beginning to be tacky. This is why you don’t see the paint “slipping and sliding” on top of thin paint. If he had too much Magic White on the canvas the thick paint would not go on the canvas.
- Notice Bill leaves blank the areas he knows he will paint on in the future as he moves forward. He doesn’t want there to be layers of paint that he has to paint over.
- He darkens the color as he comes closer to the viewer. Remember distance is represented by lighter colors. Our eyes can’t see vivid colors when they are far away.
- Bill is holding the palette knife flat to the canvas and he lets the canvas pull the paint off of the palette knife.
- Bill sees the painting finished in his mind. This comes from painting thousands of paintings and from studying nature. Bill loved to be in nature. That is where he felt the most at home!
Happy Painting!
