The Ole “Thin on Thick” Trick!
One of the hardest things to know with Bill’s technique is when to use “thick” paint, and when to use “thin” paint. Diane is going to demonstrate just how Bill’s method of Thin on Thick, Thick on Thin works. Learn this concept and you won’t have to struggle again!
Key Points To Consider:
- Diane mixes the color she wants on the palette and loads it in her brush BEFORE she thoroughly loosens it with Magic White.
- She works the Magic White into her brush well.
- She uses the Alexander 1″ Blending Brush.
- Pay close attention to the pressure applied to her brush.
- The key to Bill’stechnique is that you always work on a wet canvas.
- Notice how Diane moves her brush around a lot while varying the shapes to the tops of the trees.
- She lays the darker color down first, then highlights the top edges where the sun would hit.
- Diane lets some of the darker tree colors show through to create dimension.
- The tops of the trees are much looser with sky color showing through the leaves.
- As she moves down the tree she taps the brush multiple times in the same place to fill in the areas where it would be darkest.
- The paint on the palette knife is very loose from the Magic White. It is just slightly tinted with Alizarin Crimson.
- She varies the direction of the tree trunks to create variety.
- We will address the technique for applying the grass in a future video.
