A great explanation of how the wet-on-wet technique works.
This Video Clip is from a winter scene. Tom is creating a distant mountain range but he stops to explain to us how to use the wet-on-wet technique (and art wipes (baby wipes)) to our advantage.
Key Points
- Tom’s canvas is wet.
- The Light is coming from the left.
- He creates clouds using a fan brush. He loads it with white and then pushes the brush into the canvas, towards the left, and then jiggles the brush as he walks the color back towards the right. The paint mixes with the background color which creates the shadow side of the clouds.
- The model he is painting from has no clouds. He suggests adding clouds to paintings anyway to create more interest.
- Tom loves to use the Alexander Sable Brushes. Here he refers to the sable brush as the Alexander Foliage Brush. Later in the painting, he calls it an all-purpose brush because it can be used in many ways.
- He uses Magic Clear to thin his paint to create a distant mountain range. He wants the paint to be thin so it appears muted and distant.
- He creates a distant color made from blue and violet.
- It is possible to thin the paint with Magic White but it is faster to achieve a thinner paint by using Magic Clear.
- He is mixing into the background color and it is muted.
- Tom uses an art wipe (baby wipe) to remove paint from the canvas. He does this to demonstrate the difference between painting into wet paint and painting on a dry canvas. Both techniques are effective.
- Notice Tom touched the wet Magic White. It is safe to touch our Magic White. We don’t use harmful toxins such as thinner or solvents. There are other products on the market that emulate Magic White. We don’t know the chemical makeup of those products so we can’t say that it is safe to touch. Stick with Alexander Art products and you will be safe!
Happy Painting!
