A Concept That Every Great Painter Knew
This Video Clip is short but outlines an important concept when designing a composition.
Key Points
- Tom always thinks of Fibonacci’s Law of Thirds as he lays out his composition.
- He divides the canvas into thirds, horizontally and vertically. This gives him guidelines as he decides how he wants it to look.
- Normally when he is painting he doesn’t draw the lines out. He knows the importance of the law and is thinking about them as he paints. He just knows where the lines would appear.
- He is not afraid to put the lines on the canvas because he knows that blue will go into everything he will paint from here forward.
- For this painting, he keeps his sky in the top third of the canvas.
- People always asked how Bill could just paint paintings from his head. Well, two reasons come to mind. First, he painted for most of his life. Second, he keeps in mind the Landscape laws such as the one Tom is showing today.
Happy Painting!
