A Lesson On Transparent Paint!
Lowell is going to show you an effective way to paint leaves on a black background.
Key Points To Consider:
- The canvas is coated with “Alexander Black Medium,” NOT an acrylic black paint. Sometimes we show a technique where the background is painted black with acrylic paint, and allowed to dry, but today Lowell is using a wet Black Medium.
- Alexander Black Medium is a thin paint, same consistency as Magic White®.
- He adds a transparent paint, Alizarin Crimson, onto and into the Black Medium. Notice how he goes over the same area multiple times to work the color into the Black Medium.
- He starts up at the top of the stem where the leaves would be the lightest.
- He doesn’t reload as he works down the stem which gives the appearance of darker leaves because he is losing white paint as he goes along.
- Lowell doesn’t work the Alizarin Crimson into the Magic White® as much as he did the Black Medium which means the paint was a little thicker in the white area. This is one of the reasons the technique wasn’t as effective.
If you understand key concepts and techniques anything is possible!
Happy Painting!
