A Rose Bud in One Simple Stroke
This tip looks so simple! Please keep in mind that Lowell has painted thousands of floral paintings in his lifetime. Imagine what your paintings will look like when you have practiced as much as he has! Of course, your paintings will be much better, faster because Lowell is here to teach us simplified techniques. He struggled, so we don’t have to!
I was having a conversation with Buck the other day. We were discussing one of the paintings that was submitted for review in our “Alexander Art Guild” with Buck. Buck was telling me how important it is to understand your subject matter. For example, if you want to paint a rosebud, study rosebuds! Look at them in real life, study photographs of rosebuds. Notice how the form appears by the lights and shadows.
Lowell can paint this rosebud without looking at something because he has studied them and has painted so many before. Be patient with yourself, you will get there too! Don’t feel like you have to create compositions on your own in the beginning. Bill used to say, begin by copying others, then if you want to make it your own, move a tree to the other side or change the colors or something.
Happy Painting!
