This Tip Comes from our ” Beyond Master Class” with Tom Anderson.” This is a class where Tom teaches more advanced techniques in a live online session each week. Students then paint from the video recording each week. One of the things we like best about this class is that Tom teaches us how to mix different colors. With just a handful of colors, we can make anything we want.

We thought we’d share with you his formula for making Terra Verte. He doesn’t give the exact mixtures but if you have the colors you can experiment to get it in the range.

Things to Consider:

• Tom Is using Alexander Art Oil Paint.
• Terra Verte is earth green. It has a grey tone to it and can be used as a filler for dark spaces.
• Tom started with yellow and red to make orange. He made what he calls a “Tuscan Glow”. He adds a little more yellow and red and then adds brown. This gave him an Olive Green color so he added just a touch of Phthalo Blue and changed it to an earth green, Terra Verte.
• Notice Tom uses very little paint.
• His palette is controlled which saves money on paint.
• He used more paint for the blocking stage of the painting. He is now refining everything using glazes and little paint.
