Today’s Lesson Is About Brush Technique
Diane demonstrates Bill’s technique as she completes her painting “The Road To Timberline.” Pay close attention to her brush strokes to see how to create a beautiful foreground fir tree and a grassy area.
Key Points To Consider:
- Diane is painting on a wet canvas.
- She uses the Alexander Medium Fan Brush to create a large fir tree.
- She uses a very dark mixture of Ivory Black and Sap Green for the fir tree.
- It is important to note that she is using thick Ivory Black, not Black Medium as she used in the background.
- She loads her Fan Brush with a lot of paint. Starts about near the top of the tree, leaving the very top branchless.
- Diane uses just the corner of the brush and taps lightly to begin.
- When she has a lot of paint on the brush, there is no need to press hard.
- She has to press harder as she loses the paint as she works her way down the tree.
- Diane is also making the branches wider as she comes down the tree to give it a realistic look.
- As a fir tree’s branches are larger, they become heavier. This means that she needs to flatten the branches as she works towards the bottom of the tree.
- Notice Diane leaves space between the branches to give form to her tree.
- She uses the Alexander 1″ Brush to create the grassy area in the foreground.
- Diane is using the green mixture from before but thins it even more with Magic White®. The spring in the 1″ Brush makes it easy to lay the paint on the canvas.
- Notice she is moving on the canvas and doesn’t overwork any one area.
