Learn to Create Texture and Dimension Using Color
Bill loved to use color! Today’s Video Clip is a continuation of Bill’s Still Life Painting. Remember, this is a project that was filmed for video rather than television so Bill has more time to explain what he is doing.
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill is painting on a wet canvas.
- Watch yesterday’s video to see how he painted the base layer of the crock
- Remember, we no longer recommend you use thinner clean your brushes. We have a safer way now. Let us know if you want to know how.
- Bill loads his fan brush with lots of paint. He strategically places the color around the crock. He explains that the light will be directly in line. If it is on the outside of one side of the crock, it will hit the inside of the other side of the crock. Is that confusing? Listen for Bill to say that and watch what he does.
- The colors he is using are Alexander – Cadmium Yellow, Permanent Red, Titanium White, Phthalo Blue, Alizarin Crimson, and Phthalo Green. The paint is thick and is easily applied over the thin base on the background.
- Every time Bill uses the 2.5″ Blending Brush, he barely touches the canvas. He is just softening the color. He cleans his brush often because he picks up paint as he softly brushes over the color.
- Once Bill softens the color, he adds more thick paint. This gives a textured look to the crock.
- Bill always stood to paint. Mainly because he could move back and forth easily. He would often get back away from the canvas to see what it looked like. When you are up close to the canvas it is harder to see perspective.
- When Bill notices things aren’t quite lined up, he just corrects it to make it more accurate.
If Bill was here today he would tell you not to be afraid to try new things. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes the best learning comes from correcting mistakes. In painting, there is nothing that CAN’T be fixed. All you need is to know how to do it. We are here to help. Please reach out to us. Let us know how we can help you become the artist you were born to be.
Happy Painting!
