Meet Diane Andre, Bill Alexander’s First Master Artist!
Diane Andre was Bill’s first Master Artist! She traveled across America for 8 years teaching Bill’s technique (1978-1986). In 1986 Alexander Art filmed 11 shows with Diane at Bill’s home in Powell River. (You will hear Bill’s chickens in the background!) Fortunately, these shows were preserved and digitized along with about 400 more by other artists. For those of you with an Alexander Art Membership, you can view these on our site. atalexanderart.com.
You will soon see that Diane had a great command of Bill’s technique. She understood just how thick and thin paint work together. Fortunately for us, she was also a Master Teacher. She will help us understand it as well.
Key Points To Consider:
- We don’t recommend you use Paint Thinner. We do recommend you use Baby Wipes and the Environmentally Friendly solution Tom taught you to make last week.
- Diane utilizes Alexander Black Medium to set the mood.
- The Black Medium is applied in the same way as the Magic White®
- A clean, dry Blending Brush can be used to pick up excess paint.
- She uses the Alexander 2,5″ Blending Brush.
- Diane tints her canvas with Prussian Blue in the dark areas and Alizarin Crimson in the light area. Notice she uses very little paint. The Black Medium has already set the mood so she doesn’t need to use as much paint to get the darkness.
- Pay close attention to the pressure applied to her brush.
- The key to Bill’stechnique is that you always work on a wet canvas.
- Notice how Diane moves her brush around a lot. She doesn’t want to stay in one spot as it would cause the paint to be over-mixed.
- Diane cleans her brush constantly. We recommend you get two of each brush, one for light colors and one for dark colors. You will save money in the long run because you won’t have to clean your brush as often and will save paint.
- In the end, Diane picks up just a touch of Titanium White to give an allusion to clouds in her dark area. Again, pay attention to the amount of pressure she uses.
- Diane only had 28.5 minutes to finish her painting.
We will show you a few more clips from this project titled “The Road To Timberline.”
