Very little paint! Very little pressure!
This is one of the biggest problems for people.
Diane is laying the foundation for the mountain. We are excited to share with you soon the highlighting process but first, we must lay the foundation. Getting the base color down right IS the key to having success with the highlights.
Key Points To Consider:
- Diane is painting on a wet canvas.
- Her focus today is how to load the knife properly, how much paint to apply, and how to use the brush to create the illusion of mist.
- Her mountain background color is equal parts Alizarin Crimson and Phthalo Green.
- She scrapes all the excess paint off the canvas.
- Diane uses the shape of the knife to create the shape of her mountains.
- She loads just a bead of paint on the knife and then applies very light pressure.
- The canvas pulls the paint off the knife.
- Don’t worry about the scrape marks on the canvas. The only way to remove them is to apply too much paint. They will be covered anyway.
- The base color is dark because these mountains are close to the viewer.
- The farther away from the mountain, the lighter the color. Remember, gray is far away.
- She uses a clean, dry Alexander 2.5″ Brush to create the mist.
- Only a couple of hairs from the brush touch the dark paint, the rest are in the Magic White that is already on the canvas. This gives the right white to dark ratio.
