Bill adds the highlights and colors to create a beautiful autumn scene.
Today’s Video Tip will bring a smile to your face! Not only does Bill create a beautiful autumn scene, but he has fun while he is doing it. No one knew better than Bill about darkness and light. If you watched his autobiography that we sent out at Christmas time, you know that he started out life in a very gruesome environment. A lot of trials and tribulations followed for many years. Yet, he came to America and earned a name for himself as the “Happy Painter!” Every time I hear Bill say, “You’ve got to have dark to show light,” I am reminded of how he not only taught that concept through his painting but he also taught it in the way he lived his life. If anyone had reason to give up, Bill did! So as you watch Bill add the light to the darkness on his landscape remember when we have darkness in our lives the light will make things better!
Points To Consider:
- Bill decides where he wants the light to be. He can see it in his mind.
- He covers up what he doesn’t like.
- Just as important as deciding what to cover up, is to decide what you love and want to keep in your painting.
- “What makes a great artist is to have the guts to hold back!” Bill Alexander. What he means is that less is sometimes more! Sometimes just a hint of light will do.
- He makes sure the paint is thinned so it will stick on the thick, wet paint on the canvas.
- Bill barely touches the canvas to add highlights. He wants some of the dark to show through.
- He begins his strokes out on the edge of the tree where it would appear to be the brightest.
- He presses harder with the brush as he adds the foliage along the shoreline.
Happy Painting!
