Background Preparation? What’s The Big Deal?
Today Lowell will talk about a couple of different topics. You will see that in both cases it has to do with paint control. First, he talks about how he lays his palette out, intrinsically, from light to dark. He always places his colors in the same general area. Sometimes he might put on a little different palette lineup but he always goes from light to dark. Bill talked about this a lot too. He didn’t want to have to think of where his colors were. That way he could focus on the canvas and not on the palette. Sometimes those dark colors look the same on the palette so it is easy to get them mixed up. Always put them in the same place and you won’
Key Points To Consider:
- Lowell uses Soft White. We no longer carry Soft Titanium White because the Magic White is thicker now and takes the place of Soft White. There is a time and a place to use the Soft White paint, and a time to use Titanium White (Thick.). I bet by now you know when to use what!
- Lowell pulls his color out on his palette so he can control how much of it he puts on his brush.
- Have you noticed how thoroughly Lowell loads his brushes?
- Also, do you see the difference in the results of the background Lowell paints? He uses the Petal Brush first and then uses the “soft” Blending Brush as well. Look closely at the canvas. You will see that the brush strokes appear stronger when he used the Petal Brush. It is because that brush is a stiff bristle brush. So what effect you want will determine what kind of brush you use.
- Lowell uses very little paint because he is painting the background. Remember, the background is always a thin layer of paint. This allows the thicker paint to be added over the thin coat.
