Diane shows us how to make a scrubby tree, weathered by the Pacific Ocean
Today’s Video Clip comes from a project by Diane Andre. In another Video Clip, she showed us how to create the waves. Today she will show us how to create a scrubby tree that is on the bank. This is a different kind of tree than we have shown before. In what ways can you use this technique while painting?
The Oregon Coast is diverse. The northern Oregon coast is rocky with a little shoreline. As you travel further south there are sand dunes. Even on the hottest, sunniest days, the water is still too cold to swim. The wind is constant which is what makes the trees so “scrubby.” Is that a word? Think of a bottle brush. These trees have to be strong to withstand the wind, though the wind shapes them into what they are.
Key Points To Consider:
- Diane is painting into wet paint.
- She mixes the paint thoroughly on the palette.
- She takes her time to make sure the brush s properly loaded with plenty of paint.
- The paint is thick, which is why she can lay it onto the canvas and then create the form of the limbs.
- Diane puts the dark green base color on first, then lightens the color and adds highlights.
- The dark green mixture is thick paint. The highlight color has been thinned with Magic White. This will allow the highlight color to stick to the thick paint already applied.
- She thins the paint to create the trunk and branches.
