Light and Shadows Create Form
There are several things to learn from today’s Video Tip.
Key Points To Consider:
- The background layer is thin and wet.
- VanDyke Brown, White, and Permanent Red mixed together to make a nice “desert color.”
- Bill mixes the base color to a marbled consistency.
- He works the paint deep into the canvas because he is going to add highlights and shadows.
- He takes his time while designing the rock formations.
- When Bill is painting the rock formation he holds the knife vertical and follows the shape of the stones. When he is laying on the ground his knife is held horizontally.
- He keeps the tops defined and sharp but uses the brush to tap out the base. This keeps the formations grounded.
- Bill alternates light and dark. Meaning, he leaves dark between the areas where he adds light because “light on light” is nothing.
- Bill adds more VanDyke Brown to the mixture to darken the color. He uses color and size to give the illusion of depth in his painting. Darker objects move forward as things in the distance appear lighter. Things appear larger as they move closer to the viewer.
Happy Painting!
