Bill Alexander, King of the Mountain!
Millions of people have learned to paint as a result of Bill’s presence on PBS in the early days. He was the maverick! He paved the way for all those who followed. Did you know Bill won an Emmy for his show “The Magic of Oil Painting”?
One of the things that made Bill so magical was his genuine desire to help everyone discover that they too can paint. He took a lot of heat from the art world in his early days because he broke down the techniques that had been hidden for so long, and shared them with the world. Why did he do that? Bill believed the world would be a better place if everyone would learn to paint and see the beauty in the world. We tend to agree!
Today’s video clip is Bill sharing some very important pointers to creating mountains. Pay close attention to what he says as well as what he does. Some key points that are covered:
- How to determine the proper value for the base color
- Mixing the base color to harmonize, (to a marbled effect.)
- The first layers go deep into the canvas.
- Very little paint is left on the canvas.
- How to create a mist or rolling clouds.
Like most things in life, getting the foundation down correctly determines the outcome. Highlights and Shadows come later, but for now, learn what makes painting a mountain so easy and fun.
Please enjoy today’s short video.
Happy Painting!
