Wet-on-Wet is dangerous until you know the secrets Bill will show you.
We’ve heard it over and over! I just can’t do it! He makes it look so easy! Well, it really is that easy once you learn a few key concepts. First, though it is important to understand, not all paint is created equally.
Key Points To Consider:
- Bill’s canvas is prepared with a thin coat of Magic White®
- Too much Magic White® would cause the paint to slip and slide on the canvas. With a thin coat, the knife comes in contact with the texture of the canvas.
- Bill uses a thick, dry paint, designed for wet-on-wet. This is critical. We like to compare thin paint to milk. If you pour chocolate milk with white milk, you get light, chocolate milk because the two colors of milk meld together to form one color. Bill’s thick paint is comparable to the cake batter. If you put a chocolate cake batter with a white cake batter, they marble together but never meld. So when Bill places paint on top of other paint, it stays on top. It doesn’t dissolve into the layer below
- Bill holds his palette knife as flat to the canvas as he can so the blade doesn’t dig into the canvas and act like a plow, removing paint.
- He has a very light, gentle touch, allowing the canvas to pull the paint off of the knife.
There are ways to make thin paints work for wet on wet, but it takes work! Bill worked hard to develop a paint that would take the work and frustration out for his students. We still sell that exact formula today. The paint really does matter. Another great benefit to the Alexander Art paint is the pigment load is so heavy. This means you can use less paint to get great results. Therefore your paint will last longer. We had one customer tell us he did 55 paintings with one small tube of Alexander Art Phthalo Blue!
Our passion is to help people learn to paint because we know that when people are painting, life is better! We are all about a better life! Let us know how we can help you become the artist that you are meant to be!
Happy Painting!
