Uncertainty isn’t always a bad thing!
Today’s Tip comes from Buck’s FREE Workshop and his weekly critique class. We’ve combined two clips in one today. Buck teaches how to make a background that will add vibrancy to a painting and then he critiques the work of his student, Virginia. Notice today Buck is using acrylic paint, only,
Points To Consider:
- Buck shows us the models that he will follow.
- He shows us a dry canvas that has been prepared with a whimsical background.
- Now he wants to show us how to create a background like his.
- Buck starts with a white canvas.
- He sprays it with water.
- He adds chunks of paint, red, blue, yellow ochre, and cadmium yellow.
- Buck uses a large palette knife to move the paint around the canvas. He keeps in mind roughly where he wants the colors to be.
- He adds more water using a spray bottle.
- He holds the sides of the canvas and gently moves the canvas around to allow the paint to flow.
- Once Buck has an energetic background, he sets the canvas flat and allows it to dry.
- Best to let it dry overnight. If you are in a hurry you can use a hairdryer to move it along.
- Virginia followed these steps and sent a photo in for Buck to critique.
- Buck looked at the photo from all directions and chooses to have the red at the top of the canvas.
- Virginia nailed it! Buck could see all kinds of potential in her painting.
- You can use a variety of colors while doing this technique. Just make sure you are using acrylic paint.
Enjoy!
Happy Painting!
