Multiple Values Are Necessary To Show Form
Today’s Tip comes from Buck’s weekly critique class that we had today. Buck has been so kind to offer FREE Workshops each week while we are all in quarantine. Some of you are following along and painting from his tutorials. A few of you have submitted photos of your work to Buck for review during our weekly class.
Buck noticed something that was happening over and over so he showed us this short demonstration today to teach us what to do.
Points To Consider:
- Buck’s canvas is dry
- It takes at least three values to show form.
- Be careful not to lose your third value while adding highlights.
- He begins with Value # 3 on the wave. He adds Value #1 up on top of the wave. Then he adds just a little bit of Value #1, thinly as he comes down the wave to form Value #2.
- If the canvas is wet Value #1 would mix with Value #3 to make Value #2. 😳. Does that make sense? Since he is painting on a dry canvas he just uses less paint.
Enjoy!
Happy Painting!
