All Canvas Isn’t Created Equal
Today’s Video Clip comes from our Advanced Master Class with Tom Anderson. Tom is blocking in color for a beautiful Mediterranean scene. He is painting on a stretched canvas, 20″x24″, smooth grade. What difference does the canvas make? There are many things to consider while choosing a canvas but today Tom will show you what happens when he paints on a smooth grade canvas using just his palette knife.
Key Points to Consider;
- If Tom presses too hard, he will remove the paint.
- He holds the palette knife delicately.
- Tom likens this process to frosting a cake. If you press too hard while frosting a cake, the cake can be torn apart. Therefore it is important to stay on top of the cake.
- Tom was careful to not over-mix his colors to create color variety.
- If you use a rough-grade canvas there are more bumps and crevices. The paint may need to be thinned down with Magic Clear so the paint will go on smoothly.
